It has come to our attention that a municipal candidate has invited eligible electors to submit their name so that the candidate can “verify” whether their vote has been successfully cast. We have experienced a number of eligible voters who have contacted our department in alarm after being told by a candidate that their vote was unsuccessful.
We have no known cases of an individual receiving a voting confirmation whose vote was not successfully cast in the system.
We have verified five individuals who have been told in error by a candidate that their vote was not cast successfully, and in each case the voter was incorrectly identified as someone with a similar name. This has resulted in several individuals calling the Clerk’s Department in alarm.
The Clerk’s Department has reached out to the candidate to refrain from this practice, as per the City’s Policy for the Use of the Voters’ List. The Clerk also wishes to clarify to the public that only the Clerk’s Department can verify the Voters’ List.
If you are concerned about your vote, please contact the Clerk’s Department (519-332-0330 ext. 3320) and staff can verify that your vote was cast. Staff cannot see who you voted for, but can verify the time that each ballot was cast.
The Clerk’s Department and the Voter Help Centre will be open 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, and 8:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 22 at City Hall. The voting period closes at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 22.
